Plant a tree for the Jubilee

Plant a tree for the Jubilee

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

People from across the United Kingdom are invited to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Everyone in Wealden, from individuals to volunteer groups, community groups, villages, schools and businesses are encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees. People are encouraged to start planting in October, when the tree planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

With a focus on planting sustainably, The Queen’s Green Canopy encourages planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

At the meeting of Wealden Full Council on Wednesday 21 July, Chairman Cllr Ron Reed said:

“It would be wonderful to see everyone in Wealden getting involved in this initiative. I would really love to hear about plans in your areas so please do spread the word. I very much look forward to coming along to some tree planting ceremonies to mark the Jubilee!”

To support the creation of woodland, the Forestry Commission has recently launched its flagship new grant scheme for farmers and landowners; the England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO). The EWCO can support a wide range of woodland types and sizes. The minimum size required for the new woodland is 1 hectare and will pay for standard capital costs for tree planting (up to a £ 8,500 per hectare cap). This as well as an annual  maintenance payment for up to 10 years. The Offer can also reward farmers and landowners for providing public and/or wider environmental benefits.

All trees should be planted with permission from the landowner. Town and Parish Councils interested in new woodland creation can contact sustainability@wealden.gov.uk
